Press Release

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

U.S. Representative Charlie Crist (D-St. Petersburg) issued this statement following announcement of the Senate's bipartisan gun violence prevention framework. While final text has not been released yet, the Senate framework comes as a result of negotiations between 10 Democratic and 10 Republican Senators, improving the prospects that a final agreement could overcome the Senate filibuster.

"While more must be done to make our communities safe from gun violence -- namely, universal background checks and a ban on sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines -- I am cautiously optimistic that we could see the first bipartisan gun violence prevention agreement in 30 years," said Rep. Crist. "This framework is an important first step. We need to keep up the pressure until it's law."

According to Senate negotiators, the bill would:

- Provide funding for State implementation of "red flag" laws

- Provide funding for mental health and school safety measures

- Prevent domestic abusers and other violent criminals from getting their hands on firearms

- Enhance background checks for those under 21

- Tighten rules for commercial firearms dealers
